How the internet helped Police in Hushpuppi's arrest

In a video released on Thursday, the Middle-East police arrested Hushpuppi, a popular Instagram celebrity, for internet scam and other cyber related crimes on about 1.93 million victims over a period of time. According to the Middle-East police, a special team had been tracking Hushpuppi and his gang’s activities on social media for about four months, whereas, he didn’t know that Dubai E-police were tracking his every move and taking notes of all his social media activities.

Hushpuppi (Raymond Abbas) has been a popular Instagram celebrity, with so much attribution to the exotic lifestyles and properties which he shows off on the social media. In fact, he recently posted a picture of a newly acquired 2020 Rolls Royce Cullinan estimated to worth about N280 million.

Overtime, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared Raymond Abbas wanted in relations to various money laundering crimes being investigated by the anti-graft agency. According to a tweet on the official handle of the anti-graft agency, most of his transactions involve high profile cyber criminals in Nigeria who are already facing trial.

According to the Middle-East police, six raids were carried out simultaneously while the suspects were sleeping in their Dubai residences. After months of investigating and hours of monitoring the gang’s social media accounts, a team of highly trained Dubai Police officers were able to confirm the gang’s whereabouts and fraudulent activities they engage in.

The Dubai police also discovered that the gang is specialized in hacking corporate emails and sending fake messages to clients in order to redirect financial transfers and bank details to their own accounts.  The police confiscated N16bn cash, 13 luxury cars and 47 smartphones from Hushpuppi and his gang during the arrest.
