The name Sam Okyere is not new to many Koreans if not all. Sam Okyere, a Ghanian guy who had made his fortune and gained recognition in Korea had a lot to say about his stardom to fame and how he won't walk on the street of Seoul without anyone recognizing him, from old go young Koreans. Sam first sat foot on Korea soil ten years ago. Back in then he faced a totally different reality. He moved from Ghana to Korea as part of a scholarship to study computer engineering. At first, life there wasn't easy for him.
During those time, Koreans were not as open to different types of people from different places. He said people would openly walk up to him and said really bad stuffs like "you black monkey, go back to where you come from". And sometimes you go to a place and people won't want to sit by his side. Sam said he really wasn't prepared for this kind of treatment. " I was like wow!, it really hit me for the first time that racism is real". Sam elaborate. At first he was frustrated by this treatment but he realized that wasn't going to help him in the long run. He then decided to learn Korean language because language is a vital part settling into a new culture. Once he had master the language he quickly made lots of Korean friends. But his life really change when he entered the Korean entertainment industry. He started with a small role in commercials but he eventually got his big break on a variety show called "abnormal summit". As his fame grew, he decided to use his platform to start addressing racism in national TV. He said he remembered a show he did and this old Korean man was like " oh my God!, your skin is so dark, you must have been in the sun too long. Telling him to apply sun screen on his skin or something to make it lighter. But there was one old lady that said to him not to change or do anything to his skin. Sam can hardly walk the street of Seoul without being stopped by people asking for autographs.
