It's exactly 11 years ago today since Michael Jackson died, leaving millions of ardent fans who loved his music and inspirational dance steps wishing it didn't happen in the first place.

The legendary American artist who redefined music with his sonorous voice, amazing foot works and creative musical videos was a man of many parts, contrary to widely held beliefs.

Unknown to many, long before he became the cultural phenomenon he ultimately became, the Gary, Indiana-born pop icon loved to play basketball with his brothers who were part of the family music group known first as the 'Jackson Five', and later, 'The Jacksons.' Many years later after he had become hugely successful as a solo artist, breaking new grounds and selling millions of records with three straight albums in 'Off the wall', 'Thriller' (which remains the biggest selling musical album of all times!), and 'Bad', Jackson decided he'd dedicate a song to the sport which reflected the message he was trying to convey at that time. So, with the help of master producer, Teddy Riley he performed the song 'Jam' and made it the opening track in his 1991 'Dangerous' album that had such monster hits as, 'Black or white', 'Who is it?', 'Heal the world', 'Keep the faith', 'Will you be there?', 'Remember the time', amongst others.

The song, the 4th single to be released on the album had ruled the charts in 17 countries in it's first week of release and the favourable reception had further encouraged the production of the video which would feature basketball supremo himself, Michael Jordan. It was an exciting collaboration that got fans of both stars completely dazed. Both stars were from different spectrum of entertainment, but had a few things in common apart from their favourite 'MJ' initials. And so, on April 2, 1992 (28 years ago), the video for the song, 'Jam' was filmed. The essential theme revolved around both stars trying to teach other what they know how to do best. Jackson labours to teach Jordan how to dance as he takes him through a complicated 'moonwalk' dance routine, while Jordan tries to teach Jackson basketball. With collaborations from groups like Kriss Kross, Naughty By Nature and Heavy D and the Boyz, the video easily shoots to the top of the charts as the best musical video for the year 1992.

song and the video would later be nominated in two Grammy Awards categories- Best R&B song for 1993 and Best R&B male vocal 1993. It was also nominated as for Best Choreography 1993 by MTV Music Video Awards.

Interestingly, the song was amongst his hit-list renditions in the Superbowl half-time show in 1993 and had been scheduled as one of the songs he'd perform at his ill-fated, valecdictory 'This Is It' scheduled tour at the O2 Arena which never held before his unfortunate demise.
