What Nigerians Must Do To Avoid Second Phase Of Lockdown (Opinion)
Recall that Nigeria went into lockdown in March this year when the first few cases of Covid-19 were confirmed. The unexpected lockdown shook the entire country. During that time, business operations were put on hold, schools and worship centers were closed and still closed, and movement of people was restricted. Moreover, price of commodities skyrocketed and transport fares was more than doubled.

However, the lockdown was eased in May by the Government of the Federation for markets, businesses, and intra-state movement but schools and worship centers remain closed.
Despite the easing of the lockdown since May, normalcy has not been fully restored. Transport fares and prices of commodities are yet to go back to their former state, thus making life unbearable for the inhabitants.
Since the easing of the lockdown, confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the country have significantly increased. Total confirmed cases in the country currently stands at 22,614. This alarming rate of increase in Covid-19 has made the Federal Government to want to embark on another lockdown which would be the second phase of lockdown. A move I believe nobody wants having experienced what happened during the first lockdown.
But if we as Nigerians do not want to be locked down the second time, the ball is in our court. We must join hands with the government in ensuring that Covid-19 cases fall significantly. Else, second phase of lockdown will be inevitable.
Remember, as a patriotic citizen, it is your obligation to stand up for the survival of the country especially in times of difficulties such as war, natural disasters, etc. This is the time to demonstrate your patriotism; you may not have another chance to do so.
So, let us rise like gladiators and join hands with the government in combating the dreadful coronavirus pandemic which has been troubling the unity, faith, peace and progress of our dear nation.
How can this be done?
The only way in which we can have a significant decrease in Covid-19 cases is to strictly adhere to the guidelines laid down by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), which includes but not limited to the following.
1. Washing your hands thoroughly with soap and sanitizer.
2. Wearing face mask in public areas.
3. Ensuring social distancing.
4. Sneezing and coughing in your elbows.
May God heal our land and give us the enablement to adhere to the laid down guideliines which will in turn help reduce Covid-19 to the barest minimum.
