Milu deer (The Père David's deer): The deer that has the neck of horse, hooves of an ox, tail of a donkey and antlers of a buck.

These deer may not look that different from other deer, but they are actually quite unique. Its survival story is for sure one of the world's most dramatic species-survival stories.

The animal is native to China, in Chinese, it’s called “ sibuxiang” which means the "four unalikes". The animal is said to have the neck of horse, hooves of an ox, tail of a donkey and antlers of a buck.

Here is a photo of Milu deer at a Milu deer nature reserve in Beijing. There are only a few Milu deer nature reserves in the country.

So why this deer is so special and why the species has a french name?

There used to be a lot of Milu deer in China, but due to hunting, habitat destruction and war, the wild population of the deer was decimated in the country. French missionary Pere David brought some Milu deer to Europe in 1865. 20 years later, an American zoologist reintroduced animals to China. With caring and protection, the population of the Milu deer is thriving in the country now.

Here are another two photos I took of the Milu deer, hope you like them. Milu deer are good swimmers and they like to cool off in water. During summer time, they spend a long period of time relaxing in water.
