When Edo stare governor, Godwin Obaseki left the ruling All Progressive Congress APC and defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP many pundits and analysts alike felt it was a wrong political move, pointing out that the Governor was too hasty in his decision.

Obaseki's formal defection follows months of unending political rivalry and tussle with his erstwhile Godfather and benefactor, Adams Oshiomhole, who was recently suspended as National Chairman of the APC.

The differences between Obaseki and his predecessor as governor of Edo state lasted for months which later climaxed in the governor being disqualified by the party's governorship screening committee, preventing him from participating in the APC primaries where Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu emerged winner.

With Ize-Iyamu's'emergence as the party's standard bearer, it made Adams Oshiomhole ecstatic, shouting hurray, that he finally had his way - Governor Obaseki is out, Osagie Ize-Iyamu has gotten the APC ticket, exactly what he orchestrated when the 2016 governorship candidate of the PDP joined the APC in late 2019.

Despite the crisis within the APC over its leadership tussle with his suspension as National Chairman, the former labour leader was still beaming with confidence that he would have the last laugh ahead of the Edo State governorship election slated for September 19th.

But with recent developments in the polity, this show of confidence by Oshiomhole appears to be too premature.

On Thursday evening when the news broke that President Muhammadu Buhari has endorsed Victor Giadom as the acting national chairman of the APC.

Victor Giadom has been laying claim to the party's leadership following the suspension of Oshiomhole, with the National Working Committee, NWC loyal to the former Edo state governor backing immediate past governor of Oyo state Abiola Ajimobi as Acting National chairman.

But many Nigerians were taken aback when President Buhari who had long being quiet about the whole thing, confirmed that he would attend the National NEC Council, NEC meeting of the party.

In a Twitter post by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, he said that Buhari is ready to attend the virtual meeting of the party’s National Executive Council meeting that Victor Giadom announced that will hold at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday.

“The President has received very convincing advice on the position of the law as far as the situation in the party is concerned and has determined that the law is on the side of Victor Giadom as Acting National Chairman.

Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama

By the president's recognition of Victor Giadom, it effectively put an end to Oshiomhole's reign as National Chairman and by extension nullified the primary election that racrufied Ize-Iyamu as the APC governorship candidate.

This simply means that Oshiomhole's fight with Obaseki all geared to install Ize-Iyamu as the party's candidate was all a wasted effort and has ended in futility.

While Oshiomhole is now having it tough in the APC, Governor Obaseki on the other hand is being courted by all and sundry, with endorsements coming from evety angle.

Last night, a former aspirant for the PDP's ticket, Engr. Gideon Ikhine stepped down his governorship bid and endorsed Governor Obaseki.

As if that was not enough, the Rivers State high court on Wednesday dropped the suit preventing Obaseki from the PDP primary brought by Omoregie-Ogbeide-Ihama, a fellow governorship aspirant on the platform of the PDP.

Wednesday was a pleasant day for Governor Obaseki as multiple reports surfaced that Omoregie-Ogbeide-Ihama, who is the member representing Oredo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives had withdrawn from the governorship race.

Hours later, members of the PDP in Akoko Edo endorsed Governor Obaseki, pledging hundred present support for the governor's re election bid. Before this, on Tuesday, Edo Unity League, a a social political group also endorsed the governor and rallied support for his second term aspiration.

With these recent happenings in the polity, it is safe to say that Governor Obaseki is having a good laugh, with Oshiomhole still perplexed and shocked at President Muhammadu Buhari, with his recognition of Victor Giadom.
