The date June 26th was chosen by the United Nations as a day to mark the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. Every year the UN reaches out to different states to raise awareness on the effects of drugs to the societies.
The theme for this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is Better Knowledge for Better Care. The theme emphasizes the need for people to be educated about drugs and their effects and in turn the world will be able to offer the necessary help to the victims.
The UN Office On Drugs and Crime rolls out campaigns to reach out to addicts and those surrounding them with a hope of achieving a drug free society. However, the UN reports that drugs like opiates and pharmaceutical opioids, cocaine and methamphetamine are still being distributed and this has disrupted the efforts to prevent and treat drug disorders. According to the World Drug Report 2020, 35.6 million people suffer from drug use disorders globally. The report also indicates that young adults and teenagers are the most affected groups by drug abuse.
On this day to mark the fight against drug abuse, the UN is encouraging governments and societies across the world to have initiatives supporting drug victims. This is because research shows that only one out of eight people who need treatment and rehabilitation are able to get it. Societies are urged to stop stigmatizing drug addicts and instead create awareness on how they can get the required help.
