Police in Nandi County today defied the Ministry of Health regulations of social distancing to hold a major rally in Lessos town after Thursday's debacle that ended with three dead.

Led by Nandi County governor Stephen Sang, the rally went on smoothly even as the Police Service suspended the officers responsible for the three deaths.

Speaking to the angry residents, the governor assured the people that he will be in the forefront in seeking justice for the affected families.

He further lamented the growing cases of police brutality and extra judicial killings that continue to tarnish the name of the police force.

Taking to his social media page later in the day, the outspoken governor maintained that he will not relent until the culprits are prosecuted and sentenced for their crimes.

Below is a statement released by the governor:

The level of police brutality and extrajudicial killings in our country must end. In Nandi County we have witnessed such brutal killings and we will not relent until the police officers involved are brought to the book.

Yesterday three lives were lost here in Lessos due to such inhumane acts by those tasked to protect the lives of wananchi.

The National Police Service should take stern action against such officers tarnishing the service. We do not want a situation where the police resort to protecting their own when it is clear that they have committed an offence punishable by law.

Today we are happy that Inspector General of Police has assured us that the culprit in yesterday's killings has been interdicted and he will face the law. We need a police force that professionally handles the wananchi.

As a County Government, we will follow up on the matter and ensure that the affected families get justice. May the souls of the departed rest in peace and their families be comforted during these hard times.
