Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) manager Joseph Gikonyo and his wife Lucy Kangai have been arrested on graft charges. The two couples were found in possession of six hundred million Kenya shillings wealth that they could not explained how it was raised. This is in accordance with the Ethics and Anti- Corruption Commission (EACC).

In 2018, Joseph Gikonyo responded to an article published by The Standard questioning the huge amount of wealth he had on a hundred thousand shillings salary. " I am not to blame for the rise in prices and value of my properties, which cannot be attributed to corruption. The EACC previously sought to have me forfeit the properties to the government in 2016 but the court overruled them after I satisfactorily explained the source of my wealth," he said by then. Mr. Gikonyo has been under investigation since the year 2018 by the EACC which obtained orders to freeze his wealth.

Gikonyo and his wife have been accused of tax evasion of up to thirty eight million Kenyan shilling through a company they both manage named Giche Limited. " Joseph Chege Gikonyo and Lucy Kangai Stephen both being directors of Giche Limited accumulated unexplained assets amounting to sh 597 457 059. Further the commission established that the two fraudulently failed to pay sh 38 692 694 taxes to the Kenya Revenue Authority," read a statement from EACC.
