Lessos Residents protest

Residents of Lessos Nandi county took to the streets on Thursday 25th June after a police officer shot dead a man and left two nursing injuries for not wearing a face mask.

The police engaged in running battles with the residents who were furious after the event.

The irate residents claimed the police confronted a physically challenged man by the name Lazaro Cherop who works as a cobbler in Lessos trading center and shot him dead under unclear circumstances.

While protesting, the residents set a house belonging to a senior officer at the station on fire leading to running battles as police struggle to contain the situation.

Until the time of publication of this article, the residents had blocked the Kapsabet-Eldoret road and stopped the police from picking the body which was still lying on the road.

Reacting to the events, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargai has denounced police killings demanding that the police responsible for the incident be arrested.

“I am saddened by the news regarding the shooting at Lessos town that has claimed a life and two battling for their lives for not wearing masks cases of extra judicial killings in Nandi County are many but today's incident must be a new low. demanding 4 arrest of said officers”, tweeted Cherargei.

Renowned Journalist Abunga Makori has revealed that after the Lessos murder, police have so far killed 30 people from March since the COVID-19 disease got to Kenya: "Residents of Lessos in Nandi have burned down the house of an OCS and are currently battling to destroy a police station. They have accused a police officer of killing a cobbler for not wearing a mask. Police have now killed over 30 Kenyans since March over petty & flimsy issues”, tweeted Makori.

A report by The Star has indicated that "IPOA LAUNCHES probe into alleged fatal shooting of man by police at Lessos Trading Center in Nandi County. "
