Schools Girls Impregnated After Staying Home For More than 3 Months, Who is to Blame?

How does this make you feel? Anger? Hate? Blame? Disappointed? Nothing? I think a combination of anger and disappointment, but towards who? The pregnant girls? The parents? The government? Society? The men who impregnated them? Whom do I direct my anger to?

I believe the society, which comprises you and me, is to blame. Our belief systems as a society have changed so much over time with the age of technology and the internet contributing profoundly to the moral decadence in our community. When growing up, most of our time was spent playing outdoors, being creative. Telephones were entering the market. Television was for the few in the society, and most kids within my age set were members of youth groups in the local churches. My dad never stepped in the church because the pastor preached that alcohol was wrong, and that was his bosom friend, but he made sure that we attended church services every Sunday. This was a societal expectation.

It does not mean that the society was devoid of rapists and law offenders, or that our parents were perfect, far from it, but one thing is sure, they took their roles very seriously, and they never spared the rod. My dad was a disciplinarian. Every kid in the neighborhood feared him and rarely came to visit when he was around. Can you believe he used to punish us with a rubber whip, I still have a mark on my back, but I am thankful for my scars because they modeled me into who I am today? He passed on when I was only thirteen, may he rest in peace, but I never strayed from his guidance alluding to the proverbial saying, “Train a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

So, in what ways has society changed? First, technology has had a significant impact on society, both good and bad. The lousy influence came from the content found on the internet, which contains all kinds of information, both bad and good. The tragedy is that the illegal contents are not controlled and can be accessed by anyone, the only starter pack one need is a phone or computer and internet then you are good to go. This has made it possible for our children to search for these corrupted documents and experiment. The notorious ones are the pornographic sites.

I am confident that you had come across these obscene videos and photos even when you didn’t go looking for them. Someone will just share them in your WhatsApp group or also hack your Facebook account and post them there. Sometimes they are posted even in ‘church’ groups. They will be trending on twitter and IG and every other site.

Second is the media. Some end up making news headlines, remember ifikie wazazi? The news is full of stories about who and who divorced because someone was cheating or killed because he was caught cheating. The one that struck me was one young man from Mombasa who had to stay in Mombasa because of the lockdown, and when asked about how he felt, the first thing he said was that he might go back and find his wife pregnant by another man. What happened to ‘for better for worse, till death do us part’? Not forgetting the numerous memes gratifying infidelity. Remember the men from western who switched wives? And the lady from Mombasa who had two husbands living under the same roof? What about gay marriages and pastors molesting children and impregnating them?

Thirdly, there are very few role models to emulate. Children learn mostly through observation, and they do as you do not as you tell them to do, and this is where the problem lies. No people are willing to stand their ground and walk the talk. Instead, even the few who are not tainted have taken a back seat. They are eager to conform to what society stands for, also if it is against their values. Gone are the days when old age was synonymous with wisdom because even some old people are worse than the youth, they are the financiers, after all, they have the cash to ‘buy’ any girl or woman they want. They are fleeing with younger women leaving their wives, and the reverse applies.

I remember a friend told me that her husband had moved in with another woman. When she sought help from his parents who were also in a polygamous marriage, his mother said to her that a man will always leave and that people have thrived in polygamous marriages and that she is not exceptional. As for her, she chose to opt-out, but the point is, where do these young ones run if the very people who are supposed to guide have taken a backseat? The Bible in Roman 12: 2 warns us not to conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds. That we will be able to test and approve what God’s will is- his good, pleasing, and perfect will.

Hedonism is at the apex of society. Sex is the new normal. We live in a society where being a virgin at the age of eighteen is a miracle, where being faithful to your partner is deemed as weakness, where “mpango wa kando(s)” is exalted. Where divorce is not a surprise, how can this society be the first to cast stones when it has fallen short of the glory. How can they be the voice of change when they are tainted too? How can you teach what you don’t understand yourself?

From a very young age, we were taught that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and that our bodies are the temple of the holy spirit. If, as parents and every member of the society, we have failed, how can we guide this young generation? How many parents take time to be with their children to advise them? How many parents take their children to church every week at a young age? How many parents pray for and with their children unless they have gone astray? We are busy working so hard to provide for these children forgetting that after retirement, they will be our legacy, and everyone reaps the fruits of their labor.

All hope is not lost yet. We can still turn this around and save our society from such atrocities. We can start by being role models in every area of our lives, before men and before God. The Bible says that if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and heal their land. This is what we need to do, and maybe even the coronavirus will be lifted. Let us examine ourselves and think of our contribution towards this state we are in and make an effort to change for the best. There is a fountain flowing deep and wide and is filled with the Blood of the Lamb, which can wash away all the sins of the world. He is only waiting for you to boldly approach the throne of grace so that you can obtain mercy and grace.

As for those who felt nothing when they had the news of the alarming number of pregnancies, just remember the words of Martin Niemoller, “First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out because I was not a communist, then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a socialist. They came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist, then they came for the Jews, I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out for me.

That poem speaks volumes. You may take a backseat and point fingers at those parents and children, but if you do nothing about the situation, your daughters, too, will meet those young men as their husbands, and the circle will continue. In conclusion, do whatever you can and in whatever capacity you can to make the world a better place. Let us be the change we desire.
