President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that the government plans to lift the lockdowns on counties as a move of reopening up the economy which was hit hard by the outbreak of the COVID-19 disease.

The President who was speaking during a virtual leaders forum on US-Africa trade on Sunday, June 28, revealed that the lifting of the inter-counties lockdown will take place in stages.

He explained that domestic flights will be used as a trial of reopening up the counties and the general economy.

Nairobi and Mombasa are the major counties that operate flights and it is expected that they will be prioritized in lifting the lockdown.

"We are going to start domestic flights and this is what we are going to use as our trial over the next couple of days because we are opening up the lockdown of intercounties," President Uhuru stated.

The President, however, warned that lifting the lockdown too quickly may have a negative impact, therefore, it would be carried out safely.

"If you don't take precautions, opening up too quickly also has its downside. We are eager to open up but also eager to stay safe and healthy. We are doing everything to ensure we are back in the sky," he noted.

The high rate of infection in the country led to movements in and out of some of the counties being restricted.

As at the publication of this article, the country had recorded a total of 6,190 cases with 2,013 recoveries and 144 fatalities.
