Such illicit mining is known colloquially as galamsey. In Ghana, Chinese miners found ways to integrate themselves into the widespread illicit gold mining sector .

The number of galamseyers in Ghana is unknown but believed to be from 20,000 to 50,000, including thousands from China.

The military was deployed to stop the illegal miners from trespassing on a concession belonging to the Owere Mines, a mining company in the area but was welcomed by opposition from the illegal miners which led to the death of one civilian.

The incident happened at Petransa in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

Galamsey is illegal because operators involved work without regulatory approvals (from either the Ghana Minerals Commission, Environmental and other agenciesin charge).

In 2017, two illegal miners died after a mining pit collapsed on about 14 miners in that same area.

Mining (galamsey) could also cause more damaging deforestation than bad farming practices in certain parts of the country, Ghana.
