Akuffo Addo Under Fire As Angry Ghanaians Call On Him To Arrest And Jail NPP Delegates And Others.

D.K.Joseph. 06/25/2020

Sometimes laws are not made to be broken, maybe they are made to be written down. Or better still to be said and dumped. This is because it is quite worrying when ordinary people are jailed for stealing Gh¢50 but others with connections are left untouched when they commit higher offences.

This can be said if the recent laws that were announced by the government regarding the fight against COVID-19 Pandemic. The number of infections of the COVID-19 pandemic is constantly going up, although several recoveries have been recorded so far, but the Akuffo Addo led government has made a law to help minimise the spread of the deadly pandemic. According to the government, the wearing of nose masks has been made mandatory for every Ghanaian who steps outside of his home.

In his address, the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo said anyone who flouts the rule of wearing nose masks would be facing very severe sanctions. This is a move the government has taken to control the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In fact, the law said that anyone caught doing without their nose masks or face shield will have to pay a fine of between Gh¢12,000 and Gh¢60,000 or serve a prison term of between four to ten years. Several people have already expressed their reservations about the new law, saying it is too harsh. Others also believe it is definitely going to be one of those dormant laws we have in this country or be used only against the poor and vulnerable im society.

During the recent parliamentary primaries of the ruling New Patriotic Party which was held last Saturday, Ghanaians observed that the rule of wearing nose masks was openly disregarded by some people, especially after the voting exercise had taken place. The jubilant delegates forgot to wear their masks before jubilating whilst the angry delegates were not also wearing them in venting their frustrations.

This has provoked a section of Ghanaians to speak up against the Perceived selective justice that is likely to characterise the application of the new legislation. We decided to follow what Ghanaians are saying on this issue, and some people were really angry. Whilst others were worried about the survival of the fittest nature of our laws, others were concerned about the ordinary poor Ghanaians who will be later arrested and punished for flouting the same law because they don't belong to any political party and are without connections.

The following are some of the comments from Ghanaians from their various social media platforms. View pictures in App save up to 80% data.

I always hate people who pretend to be good in public, especially on television on Sunday evenings to deliver a well rehearsed speech, but are very wicked, vindictive and heartless, Mr Lomotey your days as president are numbered.
