General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia has been caught wrongly interpreting the supreme court ruling on EC’s decision to complie a new voter’s register.

Asiedu Nketia in an interview with the media was confident the court had ruled in the party’s favour to allow for the use of the old voter ID but this is not the case.

The Supreme Court of Ghana has ordered the Electoral Commission to go ahead with the compilation of a new voter’s register.

The Apex court dismissed the leading opposition party’s case by unanimous decision but also called for the inclusion of the existing voter ID card as one of the source documents for registration during the upcoming voter's registration exercise.

One Mark Takyi-Benson who wanted the use of a birth certificate as source document for eligibility to register as a voter also had his case dismissed.

The Supreme court in its decision also held that the EC is an independent body and will only be directed by the court if it acts contrary to law.

It said the EC had authority granted under Article 45 of the 1992 Constitution to compile an electoral roll.

This decision will affect Ashaiman Member of Parliament, Ernest Norgbey, who filed an action at the High Court questioning the power of the EC to compile a new register.

The EC had argued that there are many ghost names on the register, again many foreigners have the old voter's register which they can use to invade the new register should it be used as a basis of authentication.

A Deputy Minister for Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye adding his voice to the copilation of the new voters register, has stated that the Electoral Commission (EC) has demonstrated its readiness to ensure compliance with all COVID-19 precautionary protocols during the upcoming exercise.

According to Dr. Okoe Boye, the Commission has procured the needed personal protective equipment to ensure the safety of its personnel and the public during the exercise.
