The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akuffo-Addo, has been under serious criticism for the deployment of security agencies at the Volta and Oti Regions.

President Nana Akuffo-Addo has been pushed due to the increasing concerns to update the nation on the reasons for the deployment of the security operatives to the various towns. According to the President, the decision was necessitated by the need to protect the people of Ghana and not for any selfish interest as being portrayed by some people and groups.

The President indicated that, we are aware of the various terrorism activities in neighbouring countries like Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast, this made the nation deploy security personnel to the border towns as far back 2019 to guard our borders which they have been doing effectively since that time. He also added that, the outbreak of Covid-19 led to closure of our borders to prevent people from neighbouring West Africa countries from bringing the disease into the country. According to the President, the deployment of security personnel at the border towns led to the arrest of over 5000 illegal immigrant's. He also stated that the first 6 Covid-19 cases recorded in the Volta region were illegal immigrant's.

In summary, according to the President, the deployment of the security in the border towns was to help safeguard our borders due to the terrorism activities in neighbouring countries and also to help fight against the spread of Covid-19 and that it is not intended in any way to disenfranchise any eligible Ghanaian voter.

He urged all Ghanaians of 18 years and above and of sound mind to go and register and that the security operatives will not interfere in any way of the registration exercise.

It would be recalled that the flag bearer of the NDC, Mr Mahama, issued a press statement to condemn the deployment of security personnel in the Volta and Oti Regions. He was of the view that deploying military personnel in peacetime amount to declaring war on the innocent citizens.

Former President Rawlings also issued a statement expressing deep concern over the deployment of security personnel. According to him, the deployment of troops at this particular point in time, creates suspicion.
