Why President Nana Akufo-Addo Directed The Auditor General To Leave Office On 1st July 2020.

You might be surprise to have heard that, the President of Ghana; His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed the Auditor General of the Country to go on a mandatory leave.

While he is to leave his office for a number of days, he is also directed to hand over his documents and working activities to the Deputy Auditor General until he returns to office!

A lot of people have been showing their views about this issue. I want us look at the reason why the president gave such directive.

Before we talk on that, let's look at who is an Auditor General and Who is our Current Auditor General.

WORK OF THE AUDITOR GENERAL OF GHANA

According to the Constitution of Ghana, the Auditor-General is required law to audit annually the public accounts of Ghana and of all public offices including the Courts, Central and local government administrations, of the Universities, public institutions, corporations and companies or any body or organisation established with public funds, in other words, the funds of the people or citizens.

After Auditing

The Auditor General is again required by law to report his findings and recommendations to the Office to Parliament, which is expected to debate it on behalf of the citizens, as received and presented by the Public Accounts Committee and appoint, where necessary, in the public interest, a Committee to deal with matters raised.

WHO IS THE CURRENT AUDITOR GENERAL OF GHANA

Mr. Daniel Yaw Domelevo is the current Auditor General of Ghana. He was appointed and Sworn in to office on 30th December, 2016.

Mr. Daniel Yaw Domelevo is an accountant by profession. He has been an older member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ghana.

He currently holds an Executive Master's Degree in Business Administration. He received that from the University of Ghana Business SChool.

Mr. Daniel Yaw Domelevo is privilege to have worked with the World Bank as a Senior Financial Management Specialist in Harare, Zimbabwe.

WHO APPOINTED MR. DANIEL YAW DOMELEVO IN 2016.

Mr. Daniel Yaw Domelevo was one of the late appointee of Former President John Dramani Mahama.

WHY PRESIDENT NANA AKUFO-ADDO HAS DIRECTED THE AUDITOR GENERAL TO GO ON LEAVE.

On 29th June, 2020. The president of the Republic of Ghana has directed the Auditor General to take a One Hundred and Twenty-Three (123) mandatory working days leave with effect on 1st Junly, 2020.

According to the president, his decision to direct the Auditor General to take his accumulated annual leave is based on sections 20(1) and 31 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which apply to all workers, including public office holders such as the Auditor-General.

The president stated that, according to the Act, a worker is entitled to annual leave with full pay, in a calendar year of continuous service, which cannot be relinquished or forgone by the worker or the employer.

The president made it clear that, since Mr. Daniel Yaw Domelevo was appointed in 2016, has taken only nine (9) working days of his accumulated annul leave of One Hundred and Thirty-Two (132) working days.

The president stated that, It would be recalled that, on 9th April, 2009, the 3rd President of the 4th Republic, His Excellency the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, directed the then Auditor-General, Mr. Edward Dua Agyeman, to take his accumulated annual leave of approximately Two Hundred and Sixty-Four (264) working days.

WHO WILL NOW BE THE ACTING AUDITOR GENERAL?

According to the President's direction, the Deputy Auditor General who is in the person of Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu to act as the Auditor General until the return of Mr. Daniel Yaw Domelevo.
